Outer Leadership Skills

A values-based leader is a person who seeks to actively fulfill values in a group and who helps others to lead as well. Such leaders will encounter a variety of situations in their quest to make a positive difference. These situations require a variety of behaviors, that is, leadership actions. I call these "outer skills" because they are behaviors rather than the thinking patterns that underlie behaviors. Eight of the most important of these outer leadership skills are:

These outer capabilities help to bring about changes that fulfill values, heal past and prevent future violations of values. For each of these skills to be used effectively it is important for the leader to activate those inner capabilities that are needed to fill in gaps where there is a lack of understanding of the situation.
